CMJ Day 1
So after the long, over-night flights, we landed at JFK ready for a death-defying cab ride to Manhattan. We were not let down. When you come out of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and onto the island, that’s where the awesome came in! There were at least five or six life-threatening situations on our way to the hotel, and we couldn't do anything about it from the backseat.
After 30 minutes of hanging out in the lobby and trying to check-in at the Westin Hotel, we found that the three of us seemed to stick out like Alaskans in an upscale New York hotel. There was nothing but suits walking around, giving us funny looks. It was bad, but oh so hilarious.
After dropping our stuff in room 3105, we took a stroll down to Times Square for a bite to eat. We found a sit-down restaurant called Howard Johnson’s. Our waiter first asked us was if we wanted something to drink, and then if we were ready to order. His third question was, “So, where are you guys from?” I just started laughing. Apparently we just didn't have the ‘local look.’
Our next stop was Downtime. The club was hosting The Syndicate’s pre-CMJ shin-dig. Good times! We were able to meet all four of our radio contacts from The Syndicate, one of college radio’s largest promotion companies, as well as one of our newest contacts, Tom from Equal Vision Records. Before we left the Downtime, we had confirmed copies of old records from Equal Vision being sent to KRUA and a promise for a phone interview with the band Murder By Death, whose last album, “Who Will Survive and What Will be Left of Them,” did very well at the station.
Good work, KRUA reps. Good work!
